On August 13, 2016, Imam Maulana Alauddin Akonjee, the leader of a New York City mosque, and a friend, Thara Uddin, were fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack as they left Saturday afternoon prayers. Oscar Morel, 35, was charged with murder. Police said Imam Akonjee, 55, and Uddin, 64, were shot in the head as they left the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in the Ozone Park section of Queens shortly before 2 PM.
